![]() ![]() Unfortunately the brand new £30m visitor centre at the castle is unlikely to be open then although it is scheduled for "2020".so that will be an option for your next visit in 2021!!!Ī trip out to Lakeside ( by the University) on the tram gives an opportunity to see whatever exhibition is on in the gallery, a nice walk round the lake, and one of two cafes for either a snack or lunch.įor out of town - it has to be Leicester for me - it is an easy trip - good shopping, ethnic market and the excellent Richard the third visitor centre. There also isn't much to the grounds so there isn't much to explore around the museum.Īnswer: January and February.not the most exciting time to visit! Have a look at what is on at our theatres and see if anything takes your fancy. The only real downside was that it wasn't a castle and calling it Nottingham Castle is very misleading. I would say it's great for children of 5 and above, especially if they have an interest in history and art. We honestly could have spent much longer there but our youngest is 3 and there wasn't quite enough for a child that age. We spent about 2.5 hours there (including a 30min snack break). As we were going to do the city of caves later we decided against doing this one so I can't comment on how good it is (having done the city of caves tour, we now regret that choice and wish we'd done this one and skipped the other!). They have a cave tour for an additional £5. Outside is an OK sized adventure playground. It has outfits for the little ones to dress up as Robin hood and Co, there are videos talking about Robin hood and there are games for kids to play (games like the ones you get on the Nintendo wii for archery and staff fighting). The sub basement level is where the Robin hood part of the castle. It was about the history of rebellions that took place in Nottingham, made up of interactive displays and lots of fascinating history. ![]() The basement level was my personal favourite. On the top floor is art galleries, on the middle floor is a history of Nottinghams armed forces (this floor is smaller than the rest and is only a few small rooms of displays), on the ground floor they had a temporary exhibit and a small cafe. There is basically 5 levels to the museum. Having managed expectations, this is a very good museum with several different types of display. There is just a small segment of castle walls where the entrance is but other than that it is basically a museum. Have to agree with everyone else complaining about how it's not a castle. ![]()
